About the Role

As an Embedded Engineer Intern at Honeywell, you will spend the majority of your time writing, testing, and debugging firmware that runs on microcontrollers used in aerospace and industrial automation. You’ll collaborate closely with senior firmware engineers, reviewing design documents, and contributing code that meets strict safety and reliability standards. The role blends hands‑on coding with system‑level thinking, giving you a clear view of how small pieces of software fit into large, mission‑critical products.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and unit‑test C/C++ modules for sensor drivers, communication stacks, and power‑management routines.
• Participate in hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) simulations to validate firmware against real‑world signals and edge‑case scenarios.
• Assist in creating and maintaining test plans, executing regression tests after code changes, and logging results in the test management system.
• Contribute to code reviews, providing constructive feedback on readability, efficiency, and adherence to coding guidelines such as MISRA‑C.
• Document firmware interfaces, update design specifications, and maintain a knowledge base for future developers.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—electronics, QA, and product management—to clarify requirements and resolve integration issues.
• Track bugs in the issue tracker, estimate effort, and work with the team to prioritize fixes and schedule releases.

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering (or related STEM field).
• Current enrollment in a Master’s program focusing on embedded systems, control, or software engineering.
• Proficiency in C or C++ and familiarity with compiler toolchains such as GCC, IAR, or Keil.
• Basic understanding of microcontroller architecture, real‑time operating systems, and serial communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C).
• Experience with version control (Git) and continuous integration pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI).
• Strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to debugging hardware‑software interactions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, useful for documenting design decisions and presenting findings to stakeholders.

What You’ll Learn

In this internship you’ll gain hands‑on exposure to the full firmware development lifecycle—from requirement analysis to release. You’ll learn how safety‑critical aerospace software is engineered, including rigorous testing, static analysis, and compliance with industry standards such as DO‑178C. The role also offers insight into how embedded firmware interacts with high‑level application software and cloud services, giving you a holistic view of modern product stacks. By working on real‑time scheduling, power‑management, and fault‑tolerance mechanisms, you’ll develop a deep understanding of the constraints that drive embedded design decisions.
