Research Software Engineer

About the Role

The Research Software Engineer will join the SYSTRON Lab in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York, working on research projects related to Open RAN and 5G Core technologies. This role involves extending existing open-source software stacks, integrating machine learning capabilities, and contributing to scientific publications and demonstrations.

Key Responsibilities

• Extend existing open-source O-RAN software stacks to support connectivity for low-power IoT and edge devices.
• Integrate machine learning capabilities into the 5G operational stack to enable intelligent and adaptive network management.
• Contribute to scientific publications and demonstrations.
• Work closely with industry partners in a collaborative research environment.
• Collaborate with project investigators and senior members of the team to achieve research goals.
• Develop and maintain software tools and frameworks for research projects.

Skills & Qualifications

• A first degree in Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering, Computer Science, or other similar disciplines.
• Knowledge in wireless communications and research techniques and methodologies.
• Research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals.
• Demonstrable knowledge and experience of current software engineering practices, such as version control and testing.
• Proven experience in software development in multiple languages, including at least one of Python, Matlab, Java, and/or C++.
• Knowledge of appropriate 3GPP and/or O-RAN standards, modern and open networking technologies, such as SDN, NFV, OpenFlow, and Open-RAN.
• A PhD or Master degree or equivalent experience in wireless communications, networking, computer science, electronic engineering, or similar disciplines.
